Alpha Mainnet release is just around the corner, the Vega project team wants to ensure the community is kept up to date with the latest things we’re working on, and what’s left to do before mainnet. We’ll publish weekly bite-sized updates on the most important developments of the week. For more detail, you can check out the existing monthly Tech Updates. #FreeTheMarkets

What’s been done?

The first Mainnet Sim has been even more valuable than we could have imagined, and although the next Sim has been delayed, we have had a lot of data to analyse, and have made some key improvements to both the protocol and the data nodes:

  • In order to protect the data nodes, API rate limiting has been introduced. Users that exceed the rate limit will be warned and banned from submitting more requests for a period of time. The ban will increase exponentially the more times the user exceeds the rate
  • During investigations into the data node memory leak, which was the primary reason for delaying Sim 2, the team has made some changes to the consumers of the events bus. These changes are being tested in a staging environment to ensure the node’s memory usage remains stable while events are processed
  • While working through some of the Sim 1 data, the team spotted an issue related to slippage resulting in an LP being liquidated. To ensure this specific scenario does not happen, the team introduced two new market parameters. These parameters are used to cap the slippage part of the margin to avoid using the orderbook when insufficient volume or only badly priced volume is available

What’s changed?

  • No major changes to report this week, the project team has a check-in point at the end of next week to review the delay timings. At this point in time, given the work completed on the memory leak and capping of the slippage, confidence is high the Sims can start again as per the delays communicated last week

What’s next?

  • We have created a Sim 2 project board to keep an eye on the tasks required to get started again with the Mainnet Simulations

When?

The next few major milestone dates are:

  • 17th Feb (TBC) — deploy the latest code to Fairground to test data node stability ahead of Sim 2
  • 17th Feb — Complete Validator Testnet deployment
  • 7th Mar — Begin Mainnet Sim 2
  • 14th Mar — Begin Mainnet Sim 3
